I have gotten 4-6 black dyes in my 6 months of playing. I have sold all but 3. I am now just saving them up for my monk. I personally like the dark monk look (espesially on FoW armor). At least I'm not wasting money to go and buy it.
Yea, they probably should increase the rate of drops for black dye, mostly because it is a little silly how much it costs compared to the other dyes. The only reason it's so high is because...
*entering speach mode*
When the game began, people bought black dye because they thought it was "cool" or "uber 1337" (the right spelling of 1337).
Then people saw how expensive it became, and it started to be a status symbol and people horded it. Thus, it remained rather rare.
Now, there is a combination of price being made so high to start, it being a "status symbol", people thinking it looks the best, and the trade market for it.
*leaving speach mode*
And that's basically what happened to make it cost so much.

My theory is that wearing black armor is no longer a fashion statement; it's a symbol of status. (just noticed Curse You said the same thing >.<)
If it were my call all dyes would have the same, set price, of 100g a vail, then maybe dying your armor could be less of a "look how rich I am thing" and more of a "look how original I can be with this mix..."
"that idea sucks, I will have horded all those black dyes for nothing if the price suddenly dropped and set at 100g a vial"
Ofcoarse are going to respond this way, you're one of the many people with the "in it for myself" mindsets. I was merly stating that if it were in my hands I would make it so, I could care less about those who use dye as a marketing tool to get rich. (you know who you are 50g-for-all dyes Pre scammers) that's just how I feel it should be.

Obviously it's a texture problem... but I agree that ANet should do something about it.
Black should be black, otherwise we'll just mix for the same effects and pay 90% less.

I researched the mix chart. Go figure, all the coolest looking colors are the most expensive. Grr.
I tried dying my armor a purplish blue or red, it turned out pink. I HATE PINK ON WARRIORS.

Total BS, it was 5k at the beginning of the first GW Beta, a the rest of the dyes were 100g.

Well still, you can't argue that the fact most people think that black dye looks the best and that it has ended up being a status symbol as well as a thing that people horde.
Also, sooooory I wasn't in the beta event. I was using something called economics to explin why the price has gotten so high now. Maybe some people actually wanted to know about it, rather than get all angered.

There is a way to test dyes. But it only works for 1.5k armor sets and you can only try red, blue, yellow, green, purple, orange, and brown(ish). Just use the PvP creation screen.
But yes, it would be nice if you could preview what your 15k armour will look like with silver, black, and mixed colours, espesially when black dye costs so much.

I'm sure someone said this already, but dies can be combine with up to 2 other dies for alternate colors, this also includes the same color for deeper versions of the same color. Absolute black is 3 blacks combine, so if you want your armor to be absolute black, your talking about 3 X 10k X each piece of armor.
Personally I think it is ridiculous, I know "everyone" wants to have a dark brooding character, but dyes shouldn't be allowed to price so high, there need to be price caps. I can understand wanting to be colored black, afterall, who runs from a clown colored warrior?, it's the Dark Knight that scares people.
P.S. All assassin armor should be default black, just because Assassin needs a bone.

maybe you should check your screen brightness and gamma if its too high, but not sure about when black dyes on one armor looks black but on another looks grey
My uncle in "far cry" puts full gamma when playing areas that needs nightvision :P

Realistically there's no really good way of simulating subtractive colour mixing on a computer moniter, which uses only additive mixing.
Reflecting no light is not the same as emitting no light.
I still think, though, that they should give us either a colour wheel or at least something like the colour options you get when designing your guild cape. Walk up to the trader, pick your colour, get a quote, buy the freaking dye. Seriously, what kind of dye merchant can't even mix his own? Hell, bring a couple pieces of whatever your armour's made of and get a test window before you apply anything.

Before you dye your armor with expensive dye, check on wiki for all combinations of that armor =)

um... if the dye is *matte* black (which is the darkest black) your armor might end up looking weird.
There is no *absolute* black color (absolute black is reached with zero light); closest thing to black is if you put yourself within a concrete box with absolutely no light penetration.
